Omaha Hi - Lo
If you’re an expert player and you really want to take the hostilities to a field where rookies will be completely lost, the high/low version of Omaha is the right choice for you. Full Tilt Poker features this poker variant too, in the lobby, Omaha Hi/Lo games are tagged H/L.
In Omaha hi/lo the fact that this is a game of nuts becomes even more apparent. While the game plays just like Omaha Hi, there is one fundamental difference: at showdown, the pot is split between the holders of the highest and the lowest hands. What this means is that if you have a great 5-card high hand, you’ll only be entitled to half the pot, that is if someone else shows down a low hand.
Low hands have to contain five cards, none of which can be higher than an 8. If you only have four low cards (like 6, 3, 2) and a higher one (like 10) your hand does not qualify as low, therefore you won’t earn a cent on it.
The game begins just like a regular Omaha Hi one, with the posting of the blinds, followed by the first betting round. The flop then comes followed by another betting round. The turn and the river are followed by betting too, and then the showdown decides the winner. The software automatically determines the winner of both the low and the high hand. It is possible for the same player to have both the low and the high hands, in which case he ends up taking the entire pot. This is known as ‘scooping’. If there is no qualifying low hand, the winner of the high hand takes the entire pot. It is possible to take the pot down by placing a bet to which everyone folds.
Again, players are allowed to use exactly two cards from their pockets, and exactly three off the board, both for the low and the high hand. The very same 5 cards can be used as high and low hand. Take A,2,3,4,5, for instance, which is the nut low, and in the same time it is a straight which is a solid high hand. Most of the time however, players will have to use different cards in their high and low hands. Obviously, Omaha hi/lo presents players with far more possibilities to win than regular Omaha.
