Play Poker - Omaha

Omaha is another community card game many people consider is the slightly more complicated version of Texas Holdem. The reality is though that there are a few radical differences between Holdem and Omaha, which lend the two variants completely different natures. As I said on the Holdem page, Texas Holdem is a game in which rookies will readily utilize the luck factor against their more experienced opponents. In Omaha – a game also known as ‘the game of nuts’ - rookies don’t stand a chance against experienced players. Each player gets 4 hole-cards instead of two, and that fact alone means that one will have a much bigger chunk of information available about his eventual showdown hand in advance. Therefore, starting hand selection (which was moderately important in Holdem) becomes crucial here. Good poker players will develop the ability to spot nut hands and they will use them to their maximum potential.

If you know the rules of Holdem, you’ll probably learn to play Omaha High really fast too. Here’s what you have to tackle:

An Omaha hand begins with the posting of the BB and SB, which are ‘pushed’ around the table in a clock-wise direction by the dealer button. The SB is the equivalent of half a minimum first round bet, the BB is the equivalent of one full such bet. Whenever you join an Omaha table at Full Tilt poker, you’ll be asked by the software to choose whether you want to post a BB right away, or wait till it comes around to you. After having made your choice, you join the action.

As said above, after the blinds are posted, each player is dealt 4 cards face down, cards which only their respective owners will be allowed to take a peak at. In online poker they’ll be visible for you all through the hand, but not for the other players. The preflop betting round is followed by the dealing of the flop (the three community cards). Here’s where another essential difference between Holdem and Omaha comes into play. Each player may utilize exactly 2 cards (it depends on him which two) from his pocket and exactly three off the table. This is what you need to remember every time you assess your hand before tasking action: two (not 1 or 3) from the pocket and 3 off the table.

The post-flop betting round is followed by the 4th community card (the ‘turn’) another round of betting, then a 5th community card (the ‘river’) and the last betting round. The Full Tilt Poker software decides automatically the winner at showdown, rakes and then awards the pot to the winner.

Every time action is required from you, whether it’s the posting of the blinds or a regular action during a betting round, the Full Tilt Poker software will prompt you and present you with options. Set the blinds to ‘auto post’ to speed the game up, and if you reach a decision faster than the player acting before you, tick one of the ‘advanced action’ buttons to have that action executed automatically when it comes around to you. Omaha, just like Holdem, can be played 9-10 handed or with fewer players. Some prefer to play heads-up. Heads-up action is always faster and more heated than multi-handed action. Whatever your preference, Full Tilt Poker will have a table for you to suit your taste.
