Seven Card Stud
Seven-Card Stud used to be America’s favorite poker variant before Holdem came along. It is not a community card variant, and as such, it is radically different from both Omaha and Holdem. The maximum number of players online is 8, because at the end of a hand players will end up with 7 cards each. This makes Stud eat up a bunch of cards from the deck, simply not leaving enough for each player. In home games, Stud is sometimes played with more people, because it is assumed that only a few of the participants will go as far as 7th street on each hand. If more people make it to 7th street though, and the deck runs out, cards discarded by those who folded may be re-used.
runs out, cards discarded by those who folded may be re-used. Seven-Card Stud is not played with blinds, but rather with antes/bring-ins. As soon as you join a Seven-Card Stud table at Full Tilt Poker, you’re prompted to ‘ante up’ which means you have to post a blind bet. The ante is a very small amount, for example 40 cents at a $2/$4 table. The game begins with the dealer handing each player 3 cards. 2 of these cards will be placed face-down, which means they’ll be treated as hole-cards (only the player to whom they belong can see them), and one of them will be an upcard (everyone will be able to see it). In the Full Tilt interface, your hole cards will be positioned slightly lower than your face card, that’s how you’ll be able to tell them apart. The ante is then paid (by the player with the lowest upcard). The ante must be a set minimum, but it can be more than that too.
This is followed by the first betting round, during which the usual options are available. The Full Tilt client software will prompt you when it’s your turn to act, and it will give you options too. If everyone folds and only one player stays in the game, he/she wins the pot.
The dealer then gives everyone another face-card, (4th street) which is followed by betting again. With two upcards in front of each of the remaining players, it is possible that an open pair should show up somewhere. In that case, in the second betting round players may decide to bet a higher limit. If base betting is $2, and someone decides to make it $4 on account of the open pair, all subsequent betting has to be done in $4 increments. 5th street is another upcard, and the player with the highest showing partial poker hand needs to bring it in for the next round of betting. 6th street is yet another face-card, followed by yet another betting round. 7th street is a downcard (the third such card players get) and the last round of betting follows. Players need to make the best possible 5-card hand using any combination of their three hole-cards and the four upcards in front of them. At showdown, the software determines the winning hand, rakes and awards the pot to the winner.
The Full Tilt Poker software has built-in features meant to speed up the game. Use the ‘Auto post ante’ option to get yourself rid of the trouble of having to manually ante up every time it is necessary. Antes don’t go around the table like blinds so it is indeed possible that you’ll be required to ante up several times in a row, at the beginning of a hand. If you do not use the feature, the software will prompt you to post the ante whenever necessary. Using the options that allow you to take actions in advance might be useful when multi-tabling, but they may also give away precious tells about your hand, so I advise caution on that.
